If you installed or are considering installing Low Temperature Detection as a part of your security system, please consider the following:
Who will respond to our call? To effectively reduce damage, we must be able to contact you or someone with keys to investigate and quickly resolve the problem. If you may be out of touch and don’t have a reliable key holder to respond, you may wish to contact your fuel provider for twenty-four hour service program or perhaps ask a neighbor to hold a key on premise as a back-up.
What temperature to set? We have found that homes left at 50 degrees during normal winter weather are at risk during extreme cold weather. Consider setting your heat for 58 to 62 degrees as a precaution during the coldest periods.
Additional precautions? Where there is plumbing inside bathroom and kitchen cabinets, leave the doors open to aid in the circulation of warm air. If there is a convenient cut off point, consider shutting off household water or well pump to prevent damage in the event of a leak.
If you have oil heat, ask your company to install a Primary Burner control with alarm contacts. If the oil burner is powered but cannot respond to a call for heat from the thermostat we could receive a signal before the temperature begins to drop! This is the most frequent cause of heating problems and this simple connection can provide hours of early warning of a potential freeze.
Please call if you have any questions.
