Considerations for fire safety

What you don’t know about fire could be tragic! We all know about cooking fires but fires can also start inside stoves and microwaves, in dryers and other appliances, behind outlets, in chimneys and from lightning and power surges.

Consider adding centrally monitored smoke detection to your security system. If your alarm system is less than twelve years old this can be done without upgrading the central alarm panel

If you had smoke and heat detection installed as a part of your Hammond system more than ten years ago you may want to consider some upgrading to meet today’s more stringent recommendations which include one smoke sensor at the top and bottom of every stairway as well as heat detection in the garage, furnace area, kitchen and attic.

Get a dry chemical fire extinguisher rated for multipurpose use for each level of your home and be sure that everyone understands how to use it. Household fires double in size every two and half minutes! If you cannot quickly extinguish the fire, evacuate everyone from the building.

If you have fire extinguishers already, check the expiration dates and maintenance recommendations.

Know how to prevent fires from starting, detect the one’s you can’t prevent and respond to a fire once you detect it!
