Experts agree, as a minimum, ALL residential intrusion systems should include the following:

Use this as a checklist:

  • A conveniently located on/off control at the entry.

  • An on/off control station in the sleeping area to provide protection of sleeping family members.

  • Protection of all exterior doors
  • A secured basement to protect critical equipment such as the alarm panel, phone and electric boxes.

  • Interior backup protection between the living area and the sleeping area.

  • Audible alarm sounding both inside to notify occupants and outside to stop the intruder.

  • Automatic alarm shutoff after ten minutes with automatic reset and rearming

  • Adequate honest sized 12 volt battery backup power supply.

  • NFBAA recommends a minimum of one smoke sensor per level including the basement and outside of all areas where people may sleep.

  • Additional areas to consider may be children’s bedrooms, playrooms, storage rooms and attics

Residential Security Systems

The primary purpose of a home security system is to protect the family in the home and next, to protect the property.

Well designed residential intrusion systems take the lifestyle and habits of the family into consideration. It should be easy to use and provide both perimeter and exterior detection. A careful analysis should be conducted to insure good design.

Smoke and heat detectors installed as a part of a residential system, are the best way to protect your empty home or to quickly evacuate your family as the fire department is being dispatched!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 75 to 80% of all deaths by fire happen in the home. In 2005, there were 1,602,000 fires reported in the United States. Primary causes were cooking equipment (32%) and heating systems (16%) but also included where household washers and dryers (3%) and electrical and lighting equipment (2%). Intrusion systems may include:

Residential systems may include:

Keypads in convenient locations for arming and disarming of the system.- insert residential keypad image only viewable on rollover

Protection of doors and some or all windows contacted to cause an alarm when opened. These devices many be hardwired or wireless.

Full screen protection for full protection of open windows.

Audio detection to activate on the sound of glass breaking

Interior motion sensors provide a back up to perimeter protection, sounding an alarm as an intruder moves into an area of protection. Motion sensors can be set to be tolerant of pets

Interior doors may be protected to provide a separate partition of protection for gun or silver closets and jewelry or wine storage areas..

Monitored photoelectric smoke detectors only activate in the presence of visible smoke. Unlike stand alone battery operated sensors, they are not super sensitive to the things you can only smell.

Heat detectors can detect the heat of a fire even when little smoke has been produced. They are recommended for use in the kitchen, garage, furnace rooms and rooms with a fireplace. They are not considered life safety devices.
